| David Reutimann scored his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory in Monday evening’s rain shortened Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (Concord, N.C.). Reutimann led just once covering the final five laps of the race, shortened to 227 of the 400-lap distance.
Reutimann gave WIX Filters a complete sweep of summer speedweeks at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Cars using WIX Filters won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race May 15 (Ron Hornaday Jr.), the Sprint All-Star Race May 16 (Tony Stewart) and the CARQUEST Auto Parts 300 May 23 (Mike Bliss). Reutimann’s victory was the fifth in 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races in 2009.
A light rain brought out the sixth caution of the race on lap 223. Crew chief, Rodney Childers, chose not to pit the No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota during a sequence of pit stops one lap later, giving Reutimann the lead for the first time. Five laps later NASCAR officials were forced to stop the race and, try as they might, could never dry the track.
“What are you going to stay? It certainly wasn’t he prettiest win, but somebody has to win these things,” Reutimann said. “Rodney [Childers, crew chief] made a great call and told me to stay out. We need to come in and work on this thing to make it as good as we need to anyway and we’re going to lose some positions on pit road so we just stayed out and took a gamble. I have to thank Aaron’s, Lowe’s Foods, Sprint and most of all the fans for hanging out here all day long. They’ve been troopers here. It feels really good. When you envision yourself winning your first Sprint Cup race you envision it a little different. It’s so hard to win these deals that we’ll just take them any way we can get them.”
Reutimann first victory came in his 75th career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start. He claimed his second top-five and third top-10 finish of the 2009 season and won for the first time in five races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Adding to the moment was the fact that Buzzie Reutimann, David’s father, was at the race on Monday.
“We always talked about the fact that we were going to mess around and win one of these things and he wasn’t going to be here,” Reutimann said. “Fortunately, whether it was the truck series, Nationwide Series and now the Cup Series – he’s been here for all of them. It feels pretty good.”
Reutimann also was quick to thank his car owner, Michael Waltrip, for his opportunity.
Michael Waltrip gave me the opportunity to go racing in the Cup Series when nobody would have ever even thought of giving me the opportunity,” Reutimann said. “We got this one today and hopefully the next one we will earn it.”
Reutimann averaged 120.899 mph in a race that took 2 hours, 48 minutes and 59 seconds. There were 14 lead changes among 10 drivers and six cautions slowed the pace for 40 laps. The event was halted by four red flags (three for rain and one for competition).
