| For Tony Stewart, two was better than four Sunday afternoon at Kansas Speedway.
Unlike most of his rivals, Stewart and his team chose to change only right-side tires during his final pit stop in the Price Chopper 400. The move gave Stewart the lead on lap 238 of the 267-lap race and he parlayed the precious track position into his fourth victory of the season, crossing the finish line .894 seconds ahead of Jeff Gordon.
Cars using WIX Filters have racked up 14 victories in 29 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races this season in addition to the Budweiser Shootout and Sprint All-Star Race. Stewart earned WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors at Kansas and leads Kyle Busch by one race (7-6) in the overall standings.
After the race, Stewart heaped praise on his team.
“Darian [Grubb, his crew chief] and these guys on the pit crew, they are the ones that got us the win,” Stewart said. “They got us track position and I was able to pick which line I wanted on the restart and that won us the race.
“We got two tires earlier in the day and were able to go really quick on them so it was pretty much in our opinion a no-brainer of what to do. The guys that took four could just never gain the track position back. We had a really good car on two tires.”
Gordon made the race interesting down the stretch. He closed in on Stewart as the laps trickled away but could never get close enough to challenge his rival.
“We had a good enough lead there we could afford to loose a little bit of time,” Stewart said. “We didn't want to burn tires off in case we had a green-white-checker but he kept us honest for sure. We couldn’t leave too much out there.”
Stewart is fourth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship standings, 67 points leader Mark Martin, a gain of 39 points from where he started the day.
“I'm excited about that one,” Stewart said. It's the perfect scenario for us right now on the stand in points. This team is going to have some momentum going in to California next week. These guys on the Office Depot/Old Spice team are doing a great job. We've got some momentum on our side now.”
The win was the 37th for Stewart in 385 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, tying him for 18th on the all-time victory list.
“That's a stat that's really cool,” Stewart said. “I've been fortunate with Joe Gibbs Racing and now Stewart-Haas Racing to drive some really good race cars over the last 11 years. With two good crew chiefs and a bunch of good crew members, it helps make those numbers what they are. Just proud I could do it with this group of guys.”
Stewart averaged 137.144 mph in a race that took 2 hours, 55 minutes and 13 seconds to complete. There were 26 lead changes among 14 drivers and the event was slowed by six cautions 23 laps.
